Severe, malignant osteopetrosis is a life-threatening, congenital disorder that primarily affects children. This disease results in increased susceptibility to infection and an overgrowth of bony structures that may lead to blindness and/or deafness. ActimmuneŽ (interferon gamma - 1b) was approved by the FDA in February 2000 for delaying time to disease progression in patients with severe, malignant osteopetrosis.
Actimmune is the only FDA approved drug for this disease.
The most common side effects are flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache and chills.
